🚧 Delivering Under Pressure
A short notice enquiry from a client with a key delivery deadline led to a rapid turnaround of a high-pressure testing solution at one of the UK’s most cutting-edge facilities.
Jones Site Services & Installations (JSS&I) are extremely proud to have supported one of our European clients in delivering hydrostatic pressure testing at over 180 Bar at the Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) — part of the pioneering Protos strategic energy and resource hub in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

⚙️ About the Facility
The Protos ERF, currently under construction as a joint development by Encyclis and Biffa, will:
• Provide 500,000 tonnes of annual treatment capacity for non-recyclable residual waste
• Generate up to 49.9 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 75,000 UK homes
• Become the site of the UK’s first full-scale carbon capture facility for Energy-from-Waste, potentially capturing up to 380,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually
This makes it one of the most ambitious and innovative energy infrastructure projects currently underway in the UK.

🧪 JSS&I’s Role
From the initial enquiry, our team acted swiftly:
• Site attendance within 48 hours
• Specialist equipment selected
• RAMS prepared and approved
• Skilled personnel mobilised and test date confirmed
Our task was to verify two critical sections of newly installed steel pipework — supplying a key pump system and a secondary steam return rising some 15 metres into the cooling tower array.
Despite challenges including high winds, inclement weather and a busy construction environment, the task area was fully secured and controlled throughout.

💧 Testing Execution
Using a combination of in-house designed specialist test rigs and standard certified equipment, the pipework was:
1. Filled with demineralised water
2. Brought gradually up to test pressure
3. Monitored and held at over 180 Bar
4. Safely decompressed and drained in a controlled sequence
The testing was completed safely, efficiently, and to specification — providing our client with full assurance on the integrity of these critical systems.
