Project Completion Update – Trace Heating & Lagging Works at Roud, Isle of Wight
This crucial stage ensures year-round operational reliability and protection for key assets across the site. Our scope included fully trace heating and lagging:
- Sludge Tank Inlet Feed.
- Static Mixer (Ferric Dosing).
- Drain Valve.
- Pump Chamber & Pump Slab.
- Safety Showers & Insulated Hose Reel Cabinets.
- Wash Water Feed to Inlet Screens.
The site rollout ensures reliable operation, compliance to standards, and safe and efficient operation of the safety showers and hose reels.
Understanding Trace Heating
Function: An electrical system that uses heating cables to maintain or raise the temperature of pipes and vessels.
How it works: Specialised heating cables are physically attached to the pipe and powered and regulated by on-site control systems.
Applications:
- Freeze protection: Prevents pipes from freezing or bursting in cold climates.
- Temperature maintenance: Keeps liquids at a specific temperature for process stability.
Understanding Pipe Lagging
Function: Thermal insulation that covers the trace heating cables and the pipe. On this project, a mixture of soft lagging (foam with weather-resistant outer covers) was used on smaller diameter pipework, flowmeters, and valves for ease of access, while dense lagging with aluminium cladding was installed on larger ductile iron and stainless-steel pipework.
How it works: Lagging prevents heat from dissipating into the environment, ensuring the heat remains within the pipe system and reducing overall electricity usage.
Warning labels: Labels are placed on the insulation to alert others that the pipe contains trace heating equipment.
Applications:
- Improved efficiency: Retains heat, reducing the energy required to maintain operating temperature.
- System protection: Provides a protective outer layer for the heating cables and the pipework itself.
Our team worked efficiently to deliver this project on time, safely, and to the high standards our clients have come to expect. This installation enhances long-term resilience and performance of the site’s essential process equipment.
